Virtual General Assembly NSU 2020

Will you be part of the premiere at NSU: the General Assembly in virtual format? Read more about why there is a General Assembly, who is going to be there, what will be discussed, and when and how you can participate!

The Nordic Summer University is a voluntary organisation led by its members. That means: you! During the year the Board and the study circle coordinators do the best they can, but during the summer session, it is the members who get to discuss and vote about the future and direction of NSU. NSU’s highest governing body is the General Assembly. The General Assembly gathers during the Summer Session to decide on the budget and the establishment of new Study Circles. It also elects members of the NSU Board, which is responsible for running the organisation throughout the year.

The General Assembly consists of:

  • two representatives from each regional group (Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Iceland, the Baltics and the international group). The regional representatives will be elected during the regional meetings, which will take place on Sunday 26 July 2020, right after the opening reception and before the keynote lecture
  • three representatives from each Study Circle. During the first day of the study circle program, the coordinator will ask who would like to be a representative of that circle. Or you can approach them to let him or her know that you’d like to be a delegate!

These representatives constitute the assembly until the following year’s summer session and may be called in for an extraordinary meeting if needed. All NSU members can attend and have the right to address the General Assembly in order to shape the development of the organization. But only delegates can actually vote.

Please register to be part of the General Assembly! The first meeting time will be July 28, 2020 from 14:00-15:30 and 16:00-17:30 PM CET

Here in a Google Drive you can find the documents that will be discussed during the General Assembly. Documents will be uploaded there as they come in. There you can also find the agenda for each day of the GA.

Some of the most important points this year:

  • In April the Board found out that funding for 2021 has been cancelled. Only during the GA there can be a decision on what to do about this, so this will be a very important part of this year’s General Assembly! Two groups have been developing proposals and lines of action for the future of NSU:
    • a group thinking about re-organisation of NSU, and
    • a political group thinking about how to get funding.
  • Study circle program. Right now, NSU hosts nine different study circles. A study circle runs for three years, so this year three circles will be ending. Which circles will make up the program for next year? This is to be decided by the General Assembly! New circle proposals have been sent in & peer-reviewed (find those proposals here). The GA decides on a full study circle program, so not on individual study circles. The Board has made a recommendation for the full study circle program for 2021. Other proposals may be sent in (see deadline and details in the GA agenda). And the GA votes which program will be chosen & funded next year.
  • Budgets, auditors, reports. Might seem boring, but it’s very important to give the Board guidance on what to do next year, and to tell them how they’ve been done last year.
  • Elect a new Board for 2021. The nomination committee is already working on finding out who is willing and able to be part of the NSU Board 2021. You can contact them by writing to Johan Söderberg <>
