Ruth Aaqqii @greenlandoutside
wrote the eighth letter of Future Echoes in Danish to Paneeraq Siegstad Munk.To read more, see http://futureechoes.hildborchgrevink.no/

Ruth Aaqqii was born in Germany in 1979. She loves to be in nature and to go dog-sledding with her greenlandic dogs. Ruth chose to live a rather unconventional life, and therefore has no «ordinary» career to speak of. She has for the last 14 years lived in a tiny community at the world’s largest fjord on the east coast of Greenland. She also work as an organist at the Lutheran State Church in Ittoqqortoormiit.

This autumn, the letters of Future Echoes are planned to appear, with English translations, in an artist book documenting the project.

Lene Zachariassen wrote the seventh letter of Future Echoes in Norwegian to Ruth Aaqqii (to read more, see http://futureechoes.hildborchgrevink.no/)

Lene Zachariassen is an artist and leather tanner. Her workshop is in an old herring factory in Hjalteyri, Iceland. Her projects and work are born from different raw materials which are processed locally. Old horsehair-work in Iceland has long been important in her creativity. Many of her works interface skins and horse hair together.

Frida Keisu @artkeisu wrote the fifth letter of Future Echoes in Swedish to @josefina_morell (to read more, see http://futureechoes.hildborchgrevink.no/)

Frida Keisu is a realist painter based on the rugged coastline of Northern Sweden. She’s born and raised in Tornedalen, very close to the wild nature of this area. Everything she creates today is fuelled and inspired by the raw spirit of this beautiful landscape. Awareness and connection to nature and its animals are crucial for her, and this deep awe is translated via her brush strokes to her meticulous paintings. Painting and art has always played the major roles in Frida’s life. And today she both works as an independent artist as well as an art teacher and lecturer at the University of Technology in Luleå.

This autumn, the letters of Future Echoes are planned to appear, with English translations, in an artist book documenting the project.

@hennikitti wrote the fourth letter of Future Echoes in Finnish to Frida Keisu @artkeisu (to read more, see
http://futureechoes.hildborchgrevink.no/)

Henni Kitti is a visual artist and writer. Her work is an evolutionary process in which elements from images and text continually form new entities. Natural science and physical phenomena are often the starting point for her work; how we experience reality with our limited senses, and what we cannot achieve. Kitti’s first novel Elävän näköiset (Lifelikes) was published in 2014 as an extension of one of her drawing series. It studies the ways in which we understand and utilize nature and environment, by depicting amongst others natural history museums, mining industry and merchant sailing.

This autumn, the letters of Future Echoes are planned to appear with English translations in an artist book documenting the project.

TRACING THE SPIRIT #6: Future Echoes The above pub TRACING THE SPIRIT #6: Future Echoes
The above publication grew out of an early collaboration between feminist movements of the Nordic countries, starting in NSU’s summer session in 1971. Independently echoing this, writer and artist @hildborchgrevink has initiated a chain of letters in multiple languages between female writers living and working in the Nordic countries today. Future Echoes as a project, and each new letter, continue a chain and at the same time turn it in a new direction – a double perspective inspired by Victoria Browne’s discussion of feminist temporalities in her book Feminism, Time, and Nonlinear History (2014). During NSU’s summer session 2020, one writer and her letter will be presented each day here at @tracingthespirit. Later this autumn all letters are planned to appear with English translations in an artist book documenting the project. #tracesofnorth @the.nordics @nordicsummeruni @hildborchgrevink

One of our artists @giulia_mangione lets us into h One of our artists @giulia_mangione lets us into her process:

For my project Oleana I decided to work with analog film photography. The process is a bit lengthy but, in my opinion, totally worthy. In my working flow I alternate digital and analogue techniques to reach the final print. After the rolls of film have been developed by the photo lab, I usually go to the darkroom to make some contact sheets. On these prints I can see small reproductions of the entire negative on one sheet of photosensitive paper. Through these, I make a rough selection of the images I think are more interesting or better framed, and mark them. After that I move to the digital lab and I scan the images I selected in high resolution in order to see them in large size on my computer screen. After making the very final selection, I go back to the darkroom and print only the one image from one shooting session that I think looks best.

What is the experience of (not) being a keynote? What is the experience of (not) being a keynote?

One of our arts-researchers is mixing memories of #NSU with themes of journeying and everyday life. The #openness of the Nordic Summer University has always allowed playful subversions of “normal” academic practice.
Known for their “flat hierarchies”, #Nordic countries embody a tension between the desire to succeed and humbleness in the wake of traditions of superiority - like the elusive position of being a keynote... The latest film by @zu.thun_und.lassen can be found at tracingthespirit.com/2019/12/16
