C2 Palle, Future Capsule, all week online collaborative event

all week event
Future Capsule Palle Dahlstedt –  (online collaborative event, phase 1: Sun-Wed, phase 2: Thu-Sun)

The details will be announced during the opening session of our circle on 27th July from 9.30-11.00. You can join us for the introduction in our zoom room.

In the Cybioses circle we have in a series of symposia dealt with the near and far future, discussed what prediction, projection and speculation is, and what the role of technology could be in the idea of human-technology futures. We have discussed how we should or could understand such futures, and prepare or design for them.

But in our symposia, there has been some hesitation about presenting any visions or speculations – guesses – of how things will turn out. This is understandable, as it is impossible to know. Still, it is fun and interesting to try, and especially – in hindsight – to reflect on how things turned out.

Therefore, I ask you to provide your views on the far future. This trace has three phases:

Phase 1: Speculation/vision/prediction (online survey)

Answer a number of questions about what you think the future will look like in relation to specific topics. This phase is implemented as a google form survey.

Phase 2: Reflection/discussion/contradiction (online collaborative writing/discussion)

React to other people’s responses, reflect/expand/elaborate on them, or contradict. This phase is implemented as a shared text editor where everybody can add thoughts anywhere.

Phase 3: Analysis and summary

This phase will be carried out by Dahlstedt. Based on the responses and discussions, I will try to summarize the responses in a reflective essay, to be presented at our next symposium.

The complete responses, together with the essay, will be exported in a number of different formats, including being printed on different materials with different inks, and stored in various media. This material will be enclosed in a stainless steel container and buried in a safe spot.

He has studied piano, composition and electronic music (MFA, MA), and has a PhD (2004) in evolutionary computation for artistic creativity. Dahlstedt studies the deep entanglement of art and advanced technology, particularly in relation to creative and aesthetic implications. He develops new technologies for improvisation, composition and art, and is especially interested in advanced algorithms in creative process, in technologies that allow for embodied performance on electronic sounds, and new kinds of interactions, based on a systems view of emergence from human-technology interactions. He has contributed  technologies and theories to the field of computational creativity, and has received extensive artistic research funding from the Swedish Research Council.

Dahlstedt is guest professor in Art & Technology at Aalborg University, Denmark, and Associate Professor in Interaction Design and head of the Interaction Design Division at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Chalmers, and also lecturer in electronic music composition at the Academy of Music and Drama, Gothenburg.
